TUNISIA : HOW THEY QUALIFIED
Tunisia captured Africa Group 5 with a 6-1-3 record
and 21 points. The North Africans clinched a berth in
a 2-2 draw with unbeaten Morocco (5-0-5, 20) in Tunis
on October 8, 2005. Talal El-Karkouri, who had tallied
for the winners earlier, scored an own for the Moroccans
to draw Tunisia even. Jose Clayton converted a penalty
kick to tie the game at 1-1. Tunisia joined Nigeria
and Cameroon as the only African sides to qualify for
three consecutive World Cups. Perhaps the Le Temps newspaper
best summed up the match: "Enduring suffering brought
us this victory. This match was one of the most pathetic
and difficult in the history of our national team. We
were twice eliminated but we twice turned the situation
around with incredible mental strength."
