TRINIDAD & TOBAGO COACH:
Leo Beenhakker
Dutchman Leo Beenhakker has been around the international
soccer block and then some at the club and national
team level. He has coached a number of top-flight clubs
during his 33-year career. The breakdown: six clubs
in the Netherlands -- Ajax, Feyenoord, Go Ahead Eagles,
S.C. Cambuur, F.C. Volendam, Vitesse; Spain (2)-- Real
Madrid and Real Zaragoza; Mexico (2) -- Chivas de Guadalajara,
Club America; Switzerland (1) -- Grasshoppers; Turkey
(1) -- Istanbulspor A.S. He also directed the Dutch
and Saudi Arabian National Teams, at the 1990 and 1994
World Cups, respectively. While guiding Real Madrid
to three titles in the late eighties, Beenhakker earned
the nickname "Don Leo." Born on August 2,
1942, Beenhakker was named Trinidad & Tobago coach
on April 1, 2005, replacing Bertille St. Clair. "Leo
Beenhakker came and what he did was make us actually
believe that we can do it and that none of the other
sides are any better," defender Dennis Lawrence
told FIFAWorldCup.com. "Obviously he has got so
much experience and I have realized there are a lot
of things I can learn from him. He gives us the freedom
to express ourselves on the pitch. He is a confident
manager and his confidence rubs off on the players."
Beenhakker has become famous for the line: "I'm
getting so tired of this . . . "
