SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico---The hole was just too big for the Los Angeles Galaxy to dig out of. Despite defeating the Puerto Rico Islanders 2-1 on Wednesday, the Galaxy was eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions League 5-3 on aggregate. The Islanders had defeated LA 4-1 at The Home Depot Center last Tuesday.

Puerto Rico took the lead Wednesday night in the 32nd minute, when Edson Buddle was given a yellow card for taking down Brian Velez in the penalty area. David Foley put the penalty kick to the left corner of the net, while goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts dove the other way.

Six minutes later, the Galaxy equalized. A shot by Landon Donovan was stopped by Islanders goalkeeper Bill Guadette. The ball bounced off Velez, who was inside the six, and went into the net for an own goal.

Sean Franklin scored the game winner in the 84th minute. Eddie Lewis crossed a ball from the left side to Buddle. Buddle’s shot was blocked and the rebound fell to Franklin, who spun around his defender and sent a shot to the lower right corner of the net.

The Galaxy might have been able to make up the three-goal deficit were it not for Gaudette, who played in MLS for the Columbus Crew. In the 43rd minute, Donovan beat his defender and headed a shot on goal, only to have it tapped away by the Puerto Rico goalkeeper.

Gaudette parried away a left-footed shot by Donovan In the 52nd minute, a minute after another Donovan attempt was deflected wide right.

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena sent Alan Gordon into the match in the 57th minute in place of Bryan Jordan, hoping to inject some more offense into the game, and the strategy almost worked. In the 74th minute, a shot by the Galaxy forward from the top of the 18 deflected off a Puerto Rico defender, only to have Gaudette make a diving save to push it away.

Four minutes later, Mike Magee sent a ball from the near sideline into the top of the area for Buddle, whose header was slapped away by Gaudette before it was flagged offside.

The Galaxy continued to press through the five minutes of stoppage time,. A long ball upfield by Ricketts west chested down by Buddle who had his back to the goal. Omar Gonzalez was there to take the shot, but the dipping volley went wide. LA’s last attempt, four minutes into stoppage time, was a 20-yard shot by Magee that Gaudette stopped.
