Chivas' Steven Purdy to join El Salvador

CARSON, Calif. – Chivas USA defender Steven Purdy has been called up by El Salvador’s National Team to face Venenzuela on May 22 in preparation for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup. The friendly will take place in Ciudad de Mérida in Venezuela.

Purdy will join La Selecta on Monday. He will then return to the Rojiblancos in time to be available for MLS’ Week 13 match at Colorado Rapids on Saturday, May 25.
“I feel happy to be returning to La Selecta and above all to represent my country and face a very good national team like Venezuela,” said Purdy. “I always work hard day after day to win a permanent spot on the team and to be considered for El Salvador’s national team. The Gold Cup is right around the corner and I want to be part of the final cut.”

Born in Bakersfield, Calif. Purdy is the son of an American father and Salvadorian mother. The 28-year-old was elected to represent El Salvador for the first time in 2011 as part of CONCACAF’s Gold Cup competition. It was in the Quarterfinals against Panama that Purdy made his international debut. On October 11, 2011, he recorded his first goal and assist in a 4-0 rout over the Caiman Islands at El Salvador’s Estadio de Cuscatlan.
