March 8, 2010 MEXICAN LEAGUE CLAUSURA Match Day 9 roundup
JAGUARES 4, CHIVAS 0
Lowly Jaguares sent shockwaves through the Primera Division on Saturday, winning their first match of the season in a 4-0 romp over powerhouse Chivas, whose record-setting eight-game winning streak came to a crashing halt at Estadio Victor Manuel Reyna.
Jorge Daniel Hernandez opened the scoring in the 34th minute, and the 1-0 score held through the intermission. Everyone present expected a flurry of goals in the second half, but few thought they would be coming from the home team. Edgar Andrade made the score 2-0 in the 54th minute. Christian Valdez, who had hit the post earlier in the match, put Chivas in a three-goal hole 14 minutes later, and Jackson Martinez closed things out in the 84th.
The win was not only Jaguares’ first of the season but their first at home in almost a year. It was not enough, however, to lift the 1-4-4- team out of the Group 2 cellar. Chivas (8-0-1) retain a healthy lead over the rest of Group 1, with 24 points, but are only two points ahead of Monterrey in the overall standings.
MONTERREY 3, PACHUCA 0
The Rayados of Monterrey manhandled Group 2 rivals Pachuca 3-0 Saturday at Estadio Tecnologico to extend their winning streak to five games.
Hector Morales put the Rayados on the board in the 18th minute. The game stayed close into the closing minutes, when Monterrey pulled away with tallies from Walter Ayovi in the 85th minute and Osvaldo Felix Souza in the third minute of stoppage time.
Monterrey (7-1-1) have 22 points and the Group 2 lead, nine points ahead of fourth-place Pachuca (4-1-4).
MORELIA 2, ESTUDIANTES 0
There were no surprises Saturday at Estadio Morelos, where hosts Morelia (6-1-2) easily dismantled Estudiantes Tecos (1-2-6) 2-0.
Elias Hernandez netted the game-winner in the 33rd minute, and Miguel Sabah added the insurance goal in the 87th.
Tecos finished the match shorthanded after a 90th-minute red card to Joel Sanchez for fouling Luis Gabriel Rey in the box. Goalkeeper Mario Rodriguez, who kept Tecos’ hopes alive into the waning minutes with an array of acrobatic saves, stopped Sabah’s stoppage-time penalty kick to keep the loss from being even more lopsided.
CRUZ AZUL 2, SAN LUIS 1
Cruz Azul scored on both sides of the halftime break to defeat San Luis 2-1 Saturday at Estadio Alfonso Lastras Ramirez.
Emanuel Villa put the visitors on the board in the 42nd minute, and Jaime Lozano netted the game-winner in the 49th.
Blas Perez spoiled goalkeeper Jose Corona’s shutout bid, getting his foot on a rebound in the 78th minute.
The win was Cruz Azul’s fourth of the season, and leaves them third in Group 3 at 4-2-3. San Luis sits fifth in Group 1 with seven points (2-1-6).
ATLAS 1, TOLUCA 1
Hebert Efrain Alferez scored in the 85th minute to help Atlas (4-1-4) retain sole possession of third place in Group 1 with a 1-1 draw against #4 Toluca (2-5-2) Saturday at Estadio Jalisco.
Alferez’s goal countered a 31st-minute strike by Toluca’s Hector Mancilla.
PUMAS 4, PUEBLA 1
Pumas shook off a third-minute goal by Herculez Gomez, going on to defeat Puebla 4-1 Sunday at Estadio Olimpico Universitario.
Leandro Oldoni leveled the score 1-1 in the 26th minute, and Pablo Edson Barrera put the game away for Pumas in the 50th. Any hopes Puebla might have held for a comeback were dashed just after the hour mark, when Martin Bravo (61) and Jehu Beezye Chiapas (65) scored within a four-minute span to secure UNAM’s third straight win.
Pumas are second in Group 3 at 4-4-1. Puebla have only eight points from nine games (2-2-5).
TIGRES 1, INDIOS 0
Shorthanded Tigres (2-3-4) eked out a 1-0 win over league doormats Indios (0-3-6) Sunday at Estadio Olimpico Benito Juarez.
Itamar Batista scored the lone goal in the 41st minute, eight minutes after Alan Pulido collected his second yellow card in four minutes and was sent off.
Tigres staked Indios to a two-man advantage when Jesus Antonio Molina was ejected in the 63rd minute, but winless Juarez, who have scored only twice all season, were unable to capitalize.
Indios are the only team in the league with no wins after nine games.
SANTOS LAGUNA 4, ATLANTE 2
Buoyed by a man-advantage through the final 41 minutes of the game, Santos Laguna rallied to a 4-2 home win over Atlante Sunday at Estadio Corona.
Oribe Peralta completed Santos’ comeback from an early 2-0 deficit, and Carlos Quintero notched the game-winner in the 84th minute. Vicente Matias added the insurance goal in the first minute of stoppage.
Atlante, who have not win on the road during the Bicentenario, controlled the action early on, taking a 2-0 load on goals by Arturo Munoz in the third minute and Johan Fano in the 19th.
Vicente Matias took the first goal back for Santos in the 40th minute.
Santos Laguna tops Group 3 with 18 points (5-3-1), 13 points ahead of bottom-dwelling Atlante (1-2-6).
AMERICA 6, QUERETARO 0
Antonio Lopez had a natural hat trick to start Club America on their way to a 6-0 rout of Queretaro Sunday at Estadio Azteca.
Lopez scored in the 22nd, 26th and 46th minutes to stake America to an unassailable 3-0 lead. Angel Reyna added a fourth America goal in the 57th minute, Luis Sandoval made it 5-0 in the 64th, and Daniel Marquez closed things out in the 77th.
America improve to 5-1-3, good for third place in Group 2. Queretaro, who lost not only the game but a chance to pick up ground on powerhouse Chivas in the Group 1 race, remain at 14 points (4-2-3).
