PAC 12 HONORS
UCLA pair earn player of the week awards
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA sophomore defender Joe Sofia was named Pac-12 Men’s Soccer Player of the Week, while Sydney Leroux was named Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 24-31
Sofia, a native of Dove Canyon, Calif., played a key role in the Bruins’ 1-0 victories over Washington and Oregon State. On Friday against the Huskies, Sofia scored the game-winning goal in the 70th minute while also contributing to UCLA’s stout defense that allowed no shots on goal. On Sunday, Sofia and the Bruins held Oregon State to three shots on goal. UCLA has shut out seven of its last 10 Pac-12 opponents, with Sofia starting and playing in every minute of those games.
This is Sofia’s first weekly honor and UCLA’s 44th all-time Player of the Week.
Leroux achieved her second hat trick in two weeks, scoring three goals in the first half of Friday’s meeting with Colorado in Boulder. UCLA went on to win 8-0.
On Sunday, the Vancouver, B.C. native also scored the game-winner in overtime to beat Utah, 1-0. The goal was Leroux’s eighth game-winning goal of the year. She leads UCLA in scoring with 29 points (14goals, one assist) and has scored seven goals in the Bruins’ last four matches.
This is Leroux’s second Pac-12 Player of the Week honor this season and the 29th all-time selection for UCLA. She was also named the SoccerSavings.com/LA Soccer News and SoccerSavings.com/Soccer News Net Women's College Player of the Week.
