UCLA Adds pair of midfielders

The UCLA Bruins will have two new additions to its 2011 squad in transfers Ryan Lee (Ohio State) and Victor Munoz (Iona College). The two midfielders join a Bruin team that recorded a 16-5-1 record and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals in 2010 and return every starter in 2011.

Lee, from Moreland Hills, OH, played at Ohio State in 2009 and 2010. In 2010, he played in all 20 games with nine starts, scoring one goal and being awarded Team Most Improved Player honors. As a freshman, he played in 15 games and had one start. The Buckeyes played in the NCAA
Tournament each year Lee was there, advancing to the second round in 2009 and to the Round of 16 in 2010. At Orange HS, Lee was a three-time All-Cleveland selection and led his team to the 2006 district championship and to the regional finals. A 2008 NSCAA Scholar All-American, he was team captain for the Cleveland Alliance Soccer Academy (CASA), and in 2010, he started for the U-19 National Champion and Super-20 National Champion Columbus Crew teams.

Munoz, who hails from Madrid, Spain, played at Iona College last season and was the 2010 MAAC Rookie of the Year after recording five assists in 17 games and 15 starts. He had two assists in his collegiate debut in a 5-1 win over Hartwick. Munoz played for Real Madrid’s youth teams from 2001-09 and for Celta de Vigo from 2009-10. He was a member of the U-15, U-16 and U-17 Spanish National Teams.

"Having Victor Munoz and Ryan Lee join our program for the 2011 season is a huge bonus, given the fact that we return our entire starting team from the previous year,” said UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo. “To add players who have college experience and who understand the demands of the game will increase our depth and competition within our team. Both Ryan and Victor are very hard-working and are eager to fight for starting positions. With their enrollment this past Spring, we were able to incorporate them into our system, and they will be ready to hit the ground running during our upcoming preseason."

UCLA’s 2011 season kicks off at Louisville on Aug. 27
