CARSON, Calif. – Jonathan Bornstein scored in the 83rd minute as Chivas USA salvaged a 1-1 draw against Kansas City on Saturday at Home Depot Center.

Bornstein ran onto a well-placed through ball and slipped a 22-yard shot past Kansas City goalkeeper Bo Oshoniyi to give the hosts the tie.

Chivas though saw their four-point lead over Real Salt Lake cut in half. RSL beat Houston 3-1 earlier in the day and moved to within two points of Chivas, who now stand at 7-6-10.

Francisco Palencia could not shake his hamstring injury and was neither in the starting lineup nor on the bench for the match. Palencia did not play in last week’s 2-1 win at Chicago but was available for the match. Against Kansas City, Palencia sat on the bench in his warm ups but was there only for moral support.

Kansas City goalkeeper Bo Oshoniyi pushed Ante Razov’s 30-yard free kick just wide and knocked it into the post. Razov drew a foul from Sasha Victorine and nearly scored from long range but Oshoniyi denied the striker.

Chivas’ Preston Burpo made a fine save in the 19th minute off a shot from Scott Sealy. The Trinidadian fired a low hard shot from 20 yards out. Burpo dived to his left and knocked the ball wide.

Francisco Mendoza picked up a yellow card in the 38th minute and will not be available for next week’s game against Houston.

Minutes later, Mendoza was called for a questionable foul on Kansas City’s Davy Arnaud. On the right side of the penalty area, Mendoza slid and appeared to knock the ball cleanly from Arnaud. Referee Ricardo Salazar did not call a foul but assistant referee Corey Rockwell waved his flag in the air regardless. Burciaga followed with a laser beam into the far post.

Razov had a goal disallowed in first-half stoppage time. Razov was whistled for a foul on Kansas City defender Nick Garcia moments before knocking the ball into the back of the net. The goal did not stand, however, as Kansas City went into halftime with a 1-0 edge.
