It was the first defeat for Seattle (3-1-0), which dropped one point behind Chivas USA in the MLS Western Conference. Kansas City (2-2-0) won its second game in a row and moved up to third in the East.

The Sounders played a man down for 60 minutes after starting goalkeeper Kasey Keller was sent off the field with a red card in the 30th minute of the match. Keller was called for a handball outside the penalty area on a shot by the Wizards’ Herculez Gomez.
